Reiki Healing
What is Reiki?
Reiki is a gentle, hands-on energy healing technique that promotes deep relaxation and helps the body heal itself. The word Reiki means “universal life force energy.” While Reiki has been around for over 3,000 years, it was rediscovered in Japan in the 1800s and has since become a widely practiced form of holistic healing.
Reiki is not a religion, nor does it require you to believe in anything for it to work. It’s completely natural, and you don’t have to understand it to experience its benefits. Even if you’re skeptical, Reiki can still support your well-being—all that’s needed is a willingness to receive healing for your highest good.
How Does Reiki work?
Ancient healers have known for thousands of years what modern science is only now beginning to confirm—everything in the universe is energy, and this energy flows through all living things. When this life force energy is blocked or depleted, it can create imbalances that may manifest as physical, emotional, mental, or even spiritual distress. If these imbalances persist, they can contribute to more serious issues over time.
Reiki works by gently restoring the natural flow of energy, clearing blockages and rebalancing the body’s energy field (also known as the biofield). This shift can lead to a sense of calm, mental clarity, emotional balance, and improved physical health. Many people describe feeling lighter, more at peace, and deeply relaxed after a session.
The Science Behind Reiki
Reiki is classified as a biofield energy therapy—which simply means it works with the energy field that surrounds and interacts with the human body. While this might sound a bit “out there,” the concept of the biofield is backed by emerging scientific research. The biofield is essentially an electric and magnetic field produced by our bodies, and changes in this energy field can influence our physical and emotional well-being.
Studies have shown that Reiki activates the parasympathetic nervous system—also known as the “rest and digest” state—which helps lower heart rate, blood pressure, and stress hormones like cortisol. In this relaxed state, the body shifts into healing mode, supporting the immune system, reducing anxiety, and promoting overall well-being.
Reiki in Modern Healthcare
Reiki is increasingly being recognized in mainstream medicine. Many top hospitals—including The Mayo Clinic, Duke, Yale, and Johns Hopkins—now offer Reiki as a complementary therapy. Research has shown that Reiki can help reduce pain, anxiety, depression, and even blood pressure in patients recovering from surgery, cancer treatments, and other medical conditions. Clinical trials have even demonstrated Reiki’s effectiveness in reducing cancer-related fatigue.
